You have been hired by the city to design a Chinese Scholar’s Garden. The garden will be the placed at the center of downtown and will be open to the public. The commissioners and the town planners have asked you to design a garden that is both beautiful and educational.
Before construction begins, the commissioners have asked you to submit a blueprint of the garden. Included on the blueprint must be the explanation of the choice of plants, rocks, and structures as well as the meaning which each represents. You may use Garden Planner Online to design your garden.
Your garden should include each of the four major elements found in Chinese Scholar’s Gardens.
Water
Rocks
Plants
Architecture
Use the knowledge you have recently acquired of Chinese history, culture, values, religion and resources in addition to information that you find through your own research to annotate your blueprint.
Each item you place in your garden should have a purpose; therefore, a list of explanations for each item must accompany your blueprint.
In addition, you must submit a statement to the commissioner explaining your garden design. This statement should include an overall summary of your garden and its purpose and a brief explanation of how each of the four major elements incorporated in your Chinese Scholar’s Garden represents Chinese culture.
Some questions that should be answered in your feature descriptions include:
Why did the Ancient Chinese include each type of feature in their gardens?
What part or members of Ancient Chinese society created gardens?
What religion or belief system is best illustrated in your garden design?
What were these Ancient Chinese gardens used for?
How do these gardens show Ancient Chinese attitudes regarding society, family, and the relationship with nature?
Explain the flow of your water feature. What factors make it flow? What do you do to control the course of your water feature (dams, levees, etc.)? How does the flow of your water feature represent Chinese culture and beliefs?
Detailed drawing or sketch of how garden will be laid out; garden contains at least ten features.
You’ve left a few things out, details might have been overlooked, or things aren’t quite polished – but almost everything is there. Garden contains 7-9 features.
Inaccuracies and large chunks missing make your product less than appealing. Please be sure to check the rubric and turn in a product that you are actually proud of. Garden contains less than 6 features.
You turned something in, and that’s better than nothing.
